FAQ
Observed date vs calendar date — what’s the difference?
Some holidays have a fixed calendar date (e.g., July 4, November 11, December 25). If that date falls on a weekend, federal employees usually get the nearest weekday off instead: Friday before a Saturday holiday, or Monday after a Sunday holiday. In 2026, Independence Day (July 4, Saturday) is observed on Friday, July 3.
Is Columbus Day the same as Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the federal schedule?
For the federal workforce and the statutory list in 5 U.S.C. §6103, the October holiday remains Columbus Day (second Monday in October). Many states and cities also observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same date, but that does not rename the federal holiday. State and locality schedules can differ.
Do state holidays match the federal list?
Not always. States may add their own holidays, rename days, or keep offices open when federal agencies are closed (and vice versa). Always check your state and employer calendar.
What about Inauguration Day?
Inauguration Day (January 20 every four years) is a holiday only for federal employees in the Washington, D.C. area — not a nationwide federal holiday for all employees. It is not listed in the nationwide 2026 table above.
Are banks always closed on federal holidays?
Most U.S. banks follow the Federal Reserve holiday calendar and close on federal holidays, including Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Individual banks and credit unions can vary — check your institution.
Why might the stock market be open when banks are closed?
NYSE and Nasdaq set their own holiday schedule. They historically remain open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. They close for most other federal holidays and also for Good Friday.
